Support Sessions

Child Bereavement UK provides support and information across Cumbria to bereaved children up to the age of 25 and their families. Our services are provided free of charge and are offered by trained bereavement support practitioners.

Our support is provided at a number of children’s centres across the local area. Support may be offered as a family group, and we can see children or young people individually. We can also offer parents and carers support to help them in parenting a bereaved child or young person.  Please get in touch with us to find out more about what we offer and to discuss your needs.

Telephone Support Sessions

If accessing face to face support is difficult for you, or if you prefer, we can provide a series of booked telephone sessions for parents facing the bereavement of a baby or child of any age, and for parents/careers supporting children or young people, living anywhere in the UK, if someone close to them is not expected to live, or has died.  Please contact our nationwide support and information helpline to find out more about what we can offer, and to discuss your needs.

Family Groups – “A Day to Remember”

These group days allow bereaved families to get together. Children aged 4 to 12 years can meet other bereaved children with their adult carers and express their feelings through play and creative activities in facilitated groups. These peer support sessions include structured creative activities such as:

  • felt making
  • drawing
  • collage
  • storytelling

The sessions cover themes such as:

  • Memories
  • Who is there for you
  • Coping with different feelings
  • Going forward

The group days are run by Child Bereavement UK support practitioners, who all have professional experience in working ith children and families. They are supported by a team of trained volunteers. Families tell us that attending these groups has helped them to feel less isolated in their bereavement.

Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG)

Young People’s Advisory Group encourages bereaved young people aged 11-25 to meet in a supportive environment, and, based on their own experiences, they work together on a variety of projects, focusing on what they think helps young people who are grieving.

Support for Professionals

We can support the work that teachers and other professionals are undertaking with bereaved children or young people, through advice, resources or bereavement awareness sessions.

Supporting Schools

Elephants Tea Party logo FINALProfessionals in schools have a unique role in helping grieving children and young people, as children spend a significant amount of time in school. We can offer support and training to school staff supporting bereaved students. We also run an awareness programme for primary schools called the Elephant’s Tea Party.
