The death of someone special, no matter who they were, is a devastating and painful experience. Whilst there is no hierarchy to grief, families tell us that sometimes different beliefs and cultures, relationships or circumstances around the death can impact their grieving processes.

Special occasions like mothers/fathers days, Christmases, birthdays and anniversaries can also impact how families are feeling at certain points of the year and this can complicate how they feel and grieve when trying to manage these occasions. The sections on this page are designed to give information on specific areas of support such as cultures and beliefs, forces’ families, managing special occasions, sudden or violent death and understanding grief.

You can also contact our national helpline if you wish to talk it over with a Bereavement Support and Information team member who will be able to give you guidance specific to your circumstances. Call 0800 02 888 40 or 01494 568 900. The team is available Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.
