Support Sessions

At our centre in Runcorn, Child Bereavement UK offers face to face support for individuals or couples, where a baby or child has died or where children and young people, up to the age of 25, are bereaved. We are also able to support families who are facing bereavement, where a child of any age is not expected to live, or where children and young people are facing the bereavement of anyone significant in their lives.

Support may be offered individually, or as a couple. We can provide support to a family group, and we can see children or young people individually. We can also offer parents and carers support to help them in parenting a bereaved child or young person.

Our services are provided free of charge and are offered by trained bereavement support practitioners. Please get in touch to find out more about what we offer and to discuss your needs.

Telephone Support Sessions

If accessing face to face support is difficult for you, or if you prefer, we can provide a series of booked telephone sessions for parents facing the bereavement of a baby or child of any age, and for parents/careers supporting children or young people, living anywhere in the UK, if someone close to them is not expected to live, or has died.  Please contact our nationwide support and information helpline to find out more about what we can offer, and to discuss your needs.

Parents’ Support Groups

At our centre in Runcorn we hold a Support for the Supporters Group. The group meets once a month, either for a morning or an early evening meeting, lasting around 2 hours.

This group gives parents and carers, as individuals or couples, an opportunity to meet, share experiences and explore their feelings in a safe and supportive environment, when they are supporting children who have been bereaved of someone significant in their lives. Group members tell us that being with other adults, who are in the same position as themselves, helps them to feel more supported and less isolated. The activities planned each month come from the expressed needs of the group members themselves. The group is facilitated by one of our volunteers along with one of our trained bereavement support practitioners. Please contact us for more information if you feel this group might be beneficial to you.

Family Support Groups

These groups allow bereaved families to get together. Children aged 4 to 12 can meet other bereaved children with their adult carers and express their feelings through play and creative activities in facilitated groups. These peer support groups are held over 4 Saturday mornings, at our centre in Runcorn, and include structured creative activities such as:

  • felt making
  • drawing
  • collage
  • storytelling

The sessions cover themes such as:

  • Memories
  • Who is there for you
  • Coping with different feelings
  • Going forward

The groups are run by Child Bereavement UK support practitioners, who all have professional experience in working with children and families. They are supported by a team of trained volunteers. Families tell us that attending these groups has helped them to feel less isolated in their bereavement.

Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG)

Young People’s Advisory Group encourages bereaved young people aged 11-25 to meet in a supportive environment, and, based on their own experiences, they work together on a variety of projects, focusing on what they think helps young people who are grieving.

Support for Professionals

We can support the work that teachers and other professionals are undertaking with bereaved children or young people, through advice, resources or bereavement awareness sessions.

Supporting Schools

Elephants Tea Party logo FINALProfessionals in schools have a unique role in helping grieving children and young people, as children spend a significant amount of time in school. We can offer support and training to school staff supporting bereaved students. We also run an awareness programme for primary schools called the Elephant’s Tea Party.
